How To Verify A Locksmith Before They Arrive
Before anyone arrives: ask for a total price range on the phone, ask if they will need to drill anything, and check the vehicle for a company name rather than a plain unmarked car. A locksmith who avoids answering any of those three is worth cancelling on, even mid-conversation.
You are letting a stranger with lockpicking tools come to your house while you are, by definition, locked out and not thinking entirely clearly. That is exactly the situation bad-faith operators are built to exploit, and it is worth two minutes of checking before the truck is on its way.
Three questions to ask on the phone
| Question | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| What is the price range? | A specific range, upfront | “We will tell you when we get there” |
| Will you need to drill the lock? | “Almost certainly not, here is when I would” | Assumes yes before seeing it |
| Is that your final price? | Clear yes, explains what could change it | Vague, avoids the question |
What to check when the vehicle arrives
- A marked vehicle, not a plain unmarked car with someone getting out holding a bag.
- A price confirmed before work starts, not after the door is open.
- A written or texted receipt, not just a card payment with no breakdown.
None of these are hard to fake individually, but a legitimate locksmith clears all three without hesitation. A scam operation usually fails at least one.
The classic price-shopping bait
The most common version: a low advertised price on the phone, then a much higher price once the technician is at the door, justified by something discovered on arrival. If the number quoted on the phone and the number on the invoice are meaningfully different without a clear reason, that is the bait-and-switch, and it is worth naming out loud before paying.
