How to Verify a Louisiana Locksmith Licence
Louisiana licenses locksmiths. Most people don’t know that — and almost nobody in this market tells them.
Louisiana requires locksmith firms to hold a State Fire Marshal licence in the format F-####. Ask for the number before you book. You can verify it through the State Fire Marshal’s records, through the company’s BBB profile, or by asking the technician to show it on arrival. A firm that will not give you a number is not one you should let near your door.
Why this page exists
Locksmith fraud is one of the fastest-growing consumer complaints in the United States. The usual advice — “use a licensed locksmith” — is useless in most states, because most states don’t license locksmiths at all. There is nothing to check.
Louisiana is different. Here, “is this locksmith licensed?” has an actual, verifiable, yes-or-no answer. That makes you far better protected than a consumer in Texas or Florida — but only if you know to ask.

The law
What Louisiana actually requires
Locksmith firms are licensed through the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal, under its Life Safety and Property Protection division. To hold a licence, a firm must have:

HB 607, passed May 2024 and effective 1 January 2025, streamlined the application process. It did not remove any of the requirements above.
The in-state office requirement is the one that matters most to you.
The classic locksmith scam routes your call to an out-of-area call centre, which then sells the job to whichever subcontractor is nearest. That subcontractor has been vetted by nobody. Louisiana’s requirement that a property protection firm maintain a real operational office inside the state is precisely what that model is built to avoid.
So “what is your Louisiana street address?” is not a rude question. It is a licensing question.
Three ways to check
How to verify a licence in about 60 seconds
1. Ask on the phone
“What is your Louisiana State Fire Marshal licence number?” A licensed firm answers in two seconds because they say it several times a day. Write it down. It should look like F-2457 or F2582 — both real published examples from firms in this metro.
2. Check the Better Business Bureau
This is the shortcut most people don’t know. BBB publishes State Fire Marshal licence numbers and their expiry dates on business profiles. Search the company name on bbb.org and look at the licensing section. If the profile shows an F number that matches what you were told, that is independent confirmation.
3. Check with the State Fire Marshal
The Office of the State Fire Marshal maintains licensing records for Life Safety and Property Protection firms. If a number does not appear in state records, or the firm name does not match the number, stop there.
A note on honesty: licence numbers and registries change. Verify the current State Fire Marshal lookup process directly with the agency rather than relying on any third-party page — including this one. We update this page when we become aware of changes, but the agency is always the authority.

The five-question phone script
Ask these before anyone gets in a van. It takes ninety seconds and it is the single most effective thing you can do.
- “What is your Louisiana State Fire Marshal licence number?”
A real firm answers immediately. - “What is the total, including the service call?”
Not “starting at.” One number. - “Will you need to drill it?”
The honest answer is “almost certainly not, and here is when I would.” - “What is your business address?”
A Louisiana street address. Not a PO box. Not a “dispatch address.” - “Do you take cards and give an itemised invoice?”
Cash-only with no receipt tells you everything.
What to do if it has already gone wrong
- Pay by card if you possibly can. A card payment can be disputed. Cash cannot.
- Get an itemised invoice with the business name, address and licence number, even if you have to insist.
- Photograph everything — the damage, the vehicle, the invoice, the technician if they will allow it.
- Dispute the charge with your bank, citing services not as described.
- Report it to the Better Business Bureau, which tracks locksmith complaints nationally and has issued Louisiana-specific warnings.
- Report it to the Louisiana Attorney General’s consumer protection division.
- Consider having the lock rekeyed by a licensed firm. If an unvetted person drilled your door, they know where you live and how they got in.

Licensing questions
Do locksmiths need a licence in Louisiana?
Yes. Louisiana is one of roughly a dozen US states that require locksmiths to be licensed. Firms are licensed by the Louisiana Office of the State Fire Marshal under Life Safety and Property Protection rules, and licence numbers use the format F-####.
How do I check if a locksmith is licensed in Louisiana?
Ask for the licence number on the phone before booking. You can then check it three ways: the State Fire Marshal’s licensing records, the company’s Better Business Bureau profile (BBB publishes SFM licence numbers and expiry dates), and by asking the technician to show it on arrival.
What does an F number mean?
It is the format the Louisiana State Fire Marshal uses for Life Safety and Property Protection firm licences. Two published examples in the New Orleans metro are F-2457 and F2582. If a locksmith cannot produce a number in this format, they are not a licensed Louisiana firm.
What insurance must a Louisiana locksmith carry?
General liability insurance — historically a minimum of $500,000 — plus workers’ compensation. This is what covers you if something is damaged during the job.
Does a Louisiana locksmith have to have an office in the state?
Yes. Firms licensed for property protection services must maintain a physical, operational office inside Louisiana, or designate an Agent of Service. This requirement is the reason the out-of-state call centre model cannot legally operate here.
What is HB 607?
A Louisiana bill passed in May 2024 and effective 1 January 2025 that streamlined the locksmith licensing application process. It simplified the paperwork but left the core requirements — insurance, background checks and an in-state office — in place.
What background checks are required?
A fingerprint criminal background check through local law enforcement and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Convictions related to locksmithing or violent assault are disqualifying.
What is a qualifier?
Each licensed firm must designate a qualifier — a person holding ALOA specialty certification who lives within 150 miles of the business. They are accountable for the technical competence of the work the firm performs.
What should I do if a locksmith refuses to give a licence number?
Do not book them. A licensed firm knows the number and gives it immediately. Refusal, hesitation, or an answer like “we’re fully licensed and insured” without a number is the clearest early warning sign there is.
What if I have already been overcharged by an unlicensed locksmith?
Pay by card if you can, then dispute the charge with your bank. Report the business to the Better Business Bureau and to the Louisiana Attorney General’s consumer protection division. Keep the invoice, photograph any damage, and note the vehicle and technician details.
