No, not for a standard house lockout. Picking or bypassing a normal residential lock leaves no mark and the lock still works with your existing key afterwards. Drilling is a last resort on damaged, high-security, or already-broken locks, and any locksmith should tell you before they do it, not after.
This is the question people are too embarrassed to ask and too worried not to. Nobody wants a stranger with tools near their front door, and every horror story about a drilled-out lock or a pried frame gets remembered.
How non-destructive entry actually works
Most residential locks are opened one of two ways without damage:
- Picking — manipulating the pins inside the cylinder until they align, the same way the correct key would. Leaves nothing behind.
- Bypass — manipulating the mechanism directly, sometimes through a gap around the door or a weak point in the latch design, again with no lasting mark.
Both take minutes on a standard pin tumbler lock. Neither requires force, and your existing key works exactly the same afterwards.
When drilling actually happens
- The lock is already damaged or seized — corroded, silted from flooding, or mechanically broken before we arrive.
- It is a high-security cylinder specifically designed to resist picking, and the manufacturer’s own bypass method is not available.
- A previous attempt — by you, a friend, or someone else — has already damaged the mechanism.
In any of those cases, you should hear about it before it happens, with an explanation of why, not find out afterwards on the invoice.
The question worth asking on the phone
Ask directly: “will you need to drill it?” A straight answer is “almost certainly not, and here is when I would” — not a dodge, not a guaranteed no regardless of what they find at the door. If someone leads with drilling before they have even seen the lock, that is worth a second thought.
