Why Is My Key Hard To Remove From The Lock?
A key that goes in easily but fights on the way out is nearly always a worn key, a cylinder full of grit, or a plug that isn’t returning fully to its rest position. It is a warning, not a fault. Keys that stick coming out are the ones that snap off a fortnight later.
Nobody rings a locksmith about this. You wiggle it, it comes out, you get on with your day.
Then one Tuesday it doesn’t come out, and you pull harder, and you are standing on your porch holding half a key.
We’ll say the bit that costs us money: this is the cheapest problem on the whole site to fix, and almost everyone leaves it until it isn’t.
Work out which one you’ve got

The worn key test takes ten seconds
Dig out the spare. The one in a drawer that never gets used. If the spare slides out clean and the daily key doesn’t, you are done diagnosing — the lock is fine and the key is worn out.
Keys are brass. Pins are steel. The brass loses, every time, over years of pockets and ignitions and being used to open paint tins. A key cut from a worn key inherits the wear and adds its own. Two generations down the line it barely resembles the original.
Get the new one cut from the original key or to the lock’s code. Not from the one in your hand.
If both keys stick, it’s the cylinder
Two things build up in there. Dust and salt, which is a Kenner problem more than most places. And graphite, from years of someone squeezing a puffer bottle into the keyway once a season. Graphite works. Graphite plus humidity plus dust makes a grey paste that works considerably less well.
A cylinder flush and a proper lubricant sorts most of these in about twenty minutes.
What not to reach for
- WD-40. It is a solvent. It will feel brilliant for a fortnight and leave the cylinder drier than it started.
- Cooking oil, vaseline, chain lube. Anything sticky collects dust and speeds the whole thing up.
- Pliers. If the key is stuck badly enough to need pliers, the twisting force you are about to apply is exactly what snaps it.
What you want is dry graphite or a PTFE-based lock lubricant. A few pounds, sold everywhere.
Why this happens faster here
Kenner sits between the lake and the river and the air carries salt inland. Cylinder internals corrode from the inside where you cannot see it, and the plated finishes on builder-grade hardware pit first. Around Laketown and the lakefront we see cylinders that cannot be rekeyed at all because the pins have seized in their chambers.
Add the humidity swing between February and August, and hardware here simply has a shorter working life than the same lock fitted in Arizona.
When the key does finally snap
Stop. Do not push the stub further in, do not try to turn it, and do not go at it with superglue and a matchstick — we have removed the results of that and it turns a twenty-minute job into an hour. There is a full write-up on broken key extraction.
The important part afterwards is fixing what broke it. A key that snapped because the cylinder was seized will snap the replacement too.
