Why Locks Fail Faster In Louisiana Humidity
Locks fail faster in Louisiana because three things run at once: salt carried inland off the lake corrodes cylinder internals, humidity above 75 percent for months keeps moisture inside the mechanism, and timber doors swell and shrink seasonally. A lockset that would last fifteen years in a dry state often gets eight here.
People move here from elsewhere and cannot work out why their hardware keeps giving up. It is not bad luck and it is usually not bad locks.
It is the environment, and once you know which of the three is doing the damage on your door, you can pick hardware that survives it.
The three mechanisms

Salt is the one nobody expects inland
Kenner is not on the coast, so people assume salt is not a factor. It is. Lake Pontchartrain is brackish and the prevailing wind carries it inland across the north of the city. Anywhere around Laketown and the lakefront gets a meaningful dose.
What it does is invisible. The outside of the lock looks fine. Inside, the pins and springs corrode in their chambers, and one morning the key will not turn at all. We find cylinders round here that cannot be rekeyed because the pins have seized solid.
The tell before that happens: a gritty feel through the key, and a finish that has gone slightly chalky or started pitting.
Humidity does the slow damage
Kenner sits above 75 percent relative humidity for a large part of the year. That moisture gets into the mechanism and stays there, and the springs are the first casualty — a weak return spring is why a plug stops returning fully and the key starts sticking on the way out.
Electronic hardware has a specific version of this problem. Condensation forms on battery contacts and inside the housing, and cheap smart locks with poor gaskets fail here in ways they do not in Arizona. Swelling is the seasonal one
Timber takes on moisture through the summer and gives it back through the winter. A door can be a millimetre proud in July and fine in January, and a millimetre is enough to stop a latch entering a strike.

And underneath all of it, the ground moves
Worth saying because it compounds everything above. This metro sinks somewhere between 0.2 and 0.8 inches a year and slabs do not settle evenly. A frame going slowly out of square loads the latch sideways on every close, so hardware here is worn mechanically at the same time it is being corroded chemically.
What actually survives it
- Solid brass or stainless internals rather than plated pot metal. This matters more than the grade number for longevity here.
- Grade 2 as a minimum on exterior doors — heavier components simply have more material to lose. Lock grades explained.
- Weather-sealed electronics if you are going smart on an exposed door, and check there is a mechanical keyway as a fallback.
- Covered porches help enormously. The same lock under cover will outlast one in full sun and rain by years.
Maintenance that is actually worth doing
Twice a year, spring and autumn, takes about ten minutes a door.
- Blow out the keyway, then dry graphite or a PTFE-based lock lubricant. Not WD-40 — it is a solvent and leaves the cylinder drier than it started.
- Check the through-bolts on the handle plate. They work loose and loose fixings accelerate everything.
- Look at the strike for a shiny scrape where the bolt is rubbing. That is the early warning before a snapped key.
- Wipe salt off exterior hardware if you are near the lake. Sounds trivial. It is not.
The honest bit
None of this makes hardware last forever here, and anyone telling you a particular brand is immune to a Louisiana summer is selling something. What it does is turn an eight year life into twelve or fifteen, and stop the failures happening at the worst possible moment.
