Locks Explained: A Kenner homeowner’s guide
Deadbolts, smart locks, mortise, high-security — and which one belongs on your door. Written for houses in Kenner, not generic advice.
Four kinds of locks cover 95% of Kenner homes: Grade 3 knobs and single-cylinder deadbolts on tract housing from the 1970s to 1990s, Grade 2 upgrades and newer builds, mortise locks on pre-1930 homes in Old Kenner and Rivertown, and smart locks fitted over the last decade. Below is a plain-English guide to each: what they do, when they were common, what they cost, and where they fit in a Kenner house.
The four categories, at a glance
| Category | Where you see it | Typical price fitted | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deadbolts | Every exterior door, most Kenner homes | $195–$395 | Basic security, every door should have one |
| Mortise locks | Pre-1930 homes, Old Kenner & Rivertown | $395–$695 (service) — rare to replace | Historic homes, restoration |
| Smart locks | Newer builds, Chateau & Woodlake upgrades | $195–$495 (weather-sealed) | Remote access, rental turnovers, families |
| High-security locks | Businesses, higher-end Laketown homes | $295–$695 | Pick-resistance, key control, targeted risk |
The grade system
ANSI Grade 1, 2, 3 — what those numbers actually mean
Every American residential lock carries an ANSI/BHMA grade rating. It measures three things: how many open-close cycles the lock can survive, how much torque it resists before failing, and how hard it is to force. The numbers matter more than the brand.
| Grade | Cycles | Forced-entry | Where it belongs | Cost tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | 200,000 | Minimal | Budget builds, rarely used doors | $25–$65 hardware |
| Grade 2 | 400,000 | Moderate | Most Kenner homes | $65–$185 hardware |
| Grade 1 | 800,000 | High | Commercial, targeted risk homes | $185–$395 hardware |
Reality check: most 1970s to 1990s tract housing in Kenner was fitted with Grade 3 hardware and it is now at end of life. Upgrading to Grade 2 across a whole house is one of the highest-return security decisions available in the neighbourhood. Whole-house four-door upgrade runs $645 to $1,145 fitted.
What actually stops burglars — and it is not the lock
The uncomfortable truth of residential security: most forced-entry break-ins fail the frame, not the lock. The lock holds. The strike plate rips out of a 3/4-inch pine door frame with two 3/4-inch screws in it.
The single highest-return security upgrade in a Kenner house is not a $400 Grade 1 deadbolt. It is:
- Reinforced strike plates with 3-inch screws that pass through the strike into the actual wall stud
- Hinge reinforcement (same 3-inch screws through the hinges)
- Door edge protection (a metal wrap on the strike edge of the door itself)
- Solid-core or steel doors instead of hollow-core interior-style doors on exterior openings
Combined cost: $85 to $325 per door fitted, and it beats every consumer lock upgrade against forced entry. We would rather do this work for you than sell you a $400 deadbolt on a $30 frame.

Questions
Common questions
What are the main types of locks used in Kenner homes?
Four dominate. Grade 3 knobs and single-cylinder deadbolts (most 1970s to 1990s tract housing), Grade 2 hardware (upgrades and newer construction), mortise locks (pre-1930 Old Kenner and Rivertown), and smart locks (last 10 years, best when weather-sealed for Louisiana humidity).
What does “Grade 1, 2, 3” mean on a lock?
ANSI/BHMA grade is a durability and forced-entry rating. Grade 3 is builder-basic — 200,000 cycles, minimum torque resistance, budget hardware. Grade 2 is residential upgrade — 400,000 cycles, better internals. Grade 1 is commercial-spec — 800,000 cycles, hardest against forced entry. For most Kenner homes, Grade 2 is the honest sweet spot.
What is the difference between a deadbolt and a spring latch?
A spring latch (in a doorknob) retracts when you push the door — this is why credit cards can open some knobs. A deadbolt is a solid metal bolt that only moves when the key or thumb turn moves it. Deadbolts do not spring-retract. This is why every external door in Kenner should have both a keyed knob and a deadbolt.
Are smart locks safe in Kenner humidity?
Yes if you buy weather-sealed. Unsealed consumer smart locks fail within 3 to 5 years in Louisiana humidity — salt corrodes internal contacts, condensation seeps into circuit boards, buttons stop responding one at a time. Weather-sealed marine-grade smart locks last 8 to 12 years. Cost $200 to $500 fitted versus $80 to $200 for unsealed.
My mortise lock is 90 years old. Should I replace it?
Almost always no — service it. Original mortise locks from before 1940 are cast iron and brass, built to be rebuilt. Modern replacement mortise locks are worse than the ones already there. Full service (clean, re-spring, re-pin, lubricate) runs $165 to $395 and buys another 30 to 50 years. Common in Old Kenner and Rivertown.
What is the strongest residential lock?
Depends what “strongest” means. Against picking: high-security cylinders (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy) that use side-bars and moving elements. Against drilling: hardened steel inserts. Against forced entry: none of it matters if the door frame gives way first. The single highest-return security upgrade is reinforced strike plates with 3-inch screws through the frame stud into the wall — $30 in parts, beats a $400 lock on a stock frame.
How often should I replace my locks?
Rarely, if they still function smoothly. Rekey (change what key opens them) after moving in, break-ups, or if keys have gone missing. Replace hardware when it stops working smoothly, when the finish has failed, or when upgrading grade. A well-serviced Grade 2 deadbolt lasts 25 to 40 years in Kenner conditions.
