Locksmith in Susan Park, Kenner

Small pocket of 1970s ranches between Loyola and Roosevelt. Compact streets, kids everywhere in the afternoon, we know the whole grid.

Susan Park is one of the smaller subdivisions in central Kenner and one of the friendliest to work in. Roughly 300 single-family homes, mostly 1970s ranch and split-level, on a compact grid off Loyola Drive. Most calls we get here are boring — rekeys after a break-up, a spare key snapped off, a deadbolt that finally gave up after 45 years. We are 20 to 25 minutes to Susan Park.

Why Susan Park is different from the rest of Kenner

Susan Park was built out mostly in the mid-1970s as a self-contained family subdivision. It is small enough that residents know each other, and small enough that we have often worked on both sides of the same street in the same month.

Two neighbourhood-specific patterns:

  • Original hardware is still on a lot of doors. Weiser, Kwikset and Schlage Grade 3 from the mid-1970s — finally at end of life. Half of what we see here is “my lock just stopped working” and half of that is the internal spring finally fatiguing after five decades of Louisiana humidity. Replacement, not repair.
  • Detached garages and side doors. A lot of Susan Park homes have a detached or semi-detached garage with a separate side door — and that side door is often on the original 1970s knob with no deadbolt. If we are called out for the front, we usually offer to look at the garage side while we are there.

Local specifics

What we see most often in Susan Park

  • End-of-life hardware replacement. Original 1970s knobs and deadbolts finally giving up. $195 to $395 per door fitted with Grade 2 hardware.
  • Garage side-door deadbolt fitting. Adding a proper deadbolt where there was only a knob. $195 to $295.
  • Rekey after break-up or split. Most common non-hardware call here. $195 to $265 for a three-door house.
  • Broken key extraction from a spare that has been living in a purse for 20 years. $125 to $275.
  • Fitting a deadbolt to a front door that only had a knob. Not uncommon on the older Susan Park houses. $225 to $395 including the deadbolt.

Questions

Questions from Susan Park residents

My 1970s knob is falling apart. Can you fix it or do I need a whole new one?

After 45 to 50 years of Kenner humidity the internal springs and pins are usually at end-of-life. Repair is possible but you are spending $85 on a $95 problem. Full replacement with a Grade 2 knob and matching deadbolt runs $195 to $395 fitted and buys you another 30 years.

We have no deadbolt on the front door, just a knob. Should we add one?

Yes. A door with just a knob is defeated with a credit card in about 3 seconds. A single-cylinder Grade 2 deadbolt with 3-inch screws through the strike into the frame stud is one of the single best security upgrades in a Susan Park house. $195 to $295 fitted.

Our garage side door has no deadbolt either. Do we bother?

Yes — more than the front, arguably. That door is out of sight, often has no lighting, and gives access to the whole house through the garage. $195 to $295 fitted.

How fast can you get to Susan Park?

20 to 25 minutes typically from our office. Faster before 3pm, longer during evening rush.

Can you match the finish on our other locks?

Usually yes. Standard finishes — polished brass, satin nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, aged bronze — we carry in the van. Anything unusual, we quote and order in.

We are moving into Susan Park next month. Rekey during closing?

Best to schedule for the day you get the keys. $195 to $265 for a three-door house takes 45 minutes and kills every key the previous owner ever handed out — cleaner, gardener, ex-spouse, adult children.
