Highway Park was one of the earlier post-war subdivisions in Kenner and it shows in the hardware. Most homes are single-story ranches from the late 1950s through the 1960s, and a surprising number are still on their original locksets. Why Highway Park is different from the rest of Kenner
Highway Park sits along West Esplanade Avenue just south of I-10, hence the name. It was built out from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s as one of the first proper suburban subdivisions in Kenner, and the housing stock is almost entirely single-story ranches on slab foundations.
Neighbourhood-specific patterns we see:
- Original 1950s and 1960s hardware still on the doors. Corbin Russwin, Sargent, Yale, plus older Weiser and Kwikset. Some of it is genuinely beautiful and worth restoring; some is falling apart. We tell you honestly which is which.
- Interior-exterior door confusion. A lot of Highway Park houses had matching interior and exterior doorknobs when built — privacy locks on both. We often find an exterior door with a passage (unkeyed) knob because someone swapped it decades ago and never noticed. That is a Grade 2 keyed knob and deadbolt, $195 to $395 fitted, and you lock your front door for the first time in a decade.
- Interstate proximity noise on the back windows, which nobody is here for locksmith advice about, but it does mean a lot of the back doors are heavier storm doors and less used — and their locks stiffen from disuse. Worth exercising them.

My front door has an original brass Corbin lockset from 1962. Should I keep it?
Almost certainly yes — if it still functions. Original Corbin and Sargent hardware from that era is built better than anything you can buy new for under $400. A full service (new pins, springs, cleaning, lubrication) runs $145 to $225 and gives you another 30 years. If somebody quotes you $500 to rip it out and fit modern Grade 3 hardware, get a second opinion.
My key won’t turn in a 60-year-old lock. Is it dead?
Usually not. Sixty-year-old cylinders that have never been serviced pack with dried lubricant and dust. Cleaning, re-pinning and lubrication ($95 to $185) restores full function in most cases. If wear on the pins is too far along, replacement — but service first.
We have a passage knob on the front door (no keyway). How did that happen?
Somebody replaced it decades ago with a mismatched interior knob and never noticed. Very common in Highway Park. Fitting a proper keyed knob plus a matching deadbolt runs $195 to $395 and it is one of the highest-return security upgrades in the neighbourhood.
How fast can you get to Highway Park?

Can you match a very old brass finish?
Usually yes with an aged bronze or oil-rubbed bronze modern replacement, though not perfectly. If the piece is genuinely original, our recommendation is almost always to service and keep rather than replace.
We have never rekeyed in 40 years. Cost?
