Car Keys Explained: A Kenner driver’s guide
Transponder, remote head, smart key — what you own, what a replacement costs, and why the locksmith beats the dealer every time.

Why the locksmith beats the dealership
For every car key situation except brand-new-model warranty work, an automotive locksmith is faster, cheaper, and does not require a tow. Here is the actual comparison:

The dealership makes sense in one case: your car is under warranty and the manufacturer is covering the key. In every other case, ring an automotive locksmith first.
The MSY factor

What kind of car key do I have?
Four main types. Basic mechanical key (pre-1995 vehicles). Transponder key (1995 to now, most vehicles) — has a chip in the head that the car reads via an antenna in the ignition. Remote head key (a transponder key with buttons for lock/unlock). Smart key or proximity key (2010 onwards, no key insertion, push-button start). What matters for replacement cost is which category you own.
How much does a replacement car key cost in Kenner?
Basic mechanical: $15 to $65. Transponder: $95 to $250. Remote head: $150 to $300. Smart key: $200 to $625. All keys lost (no working key exists) adds $85 to $250 to any of the above.
Why is a smart key so much more expensive?
Because it contains active radio circuitry that pairs cryptographically with the car, not just a passive chip. The programming procedure is longer, sometimes requires a manufacturer wait time of 20 minutes, and the physical key blank costs more. All keys lost on a smart key can run $395 to $625.
Can any locksmith cut and program my car key?
Not any — but any properly equipped automotive locksmith should be able to handle 95% of vehicles on Kenner roads. The exceptions are some very new (last 12 months) models and a handful of luxury brands where the security key is dealer-only for the first year.
Is a locksmith always cheaper than the dealership?
Almost always yes, and by a wide margin. A dealership charges $150 to $600 for programming plus wants the car brought in — add a tow if the car is at MSY. We come to the vehicle and program on site. Same key, half the price.
How long does programming take?
Basic transponder: 10 to 20 minutes on site. Remote head with buttons: 15 to 25 minutes. Smart key: 25 to 45 minutes because of manufacturer security wait times. All keys lost adds 20 to 30 minutes to any of these.
What is “all keys lost” and why does it cost more?
If you have any working key we can use it to program a duplicate. If you have no working key at all, we have to originate a new key from the vehicle VIN and pair it to the immobiliser without a reference. That is a longer, more involved procedure with different equipment. Adds $85 to $250 depending on vehicle.
